Save The Rainforest logo

Introduction: This Curriculum is designed to help grade 9-12 students become climate literate. Its focus is on tropical forests and REDD----the REDD mechanism was included in the language of the Copenhagen Accord in December 2009. Science as inquiry and science as it relates to personal, historical and social perspective, are themes that run throughout the unit, and correlate with national teaching standards. All resources for teaching this unit are included in the curriculum or available on line (except for a guide to North American trees)

Materials: Teachers will need a computer that is connected to a projector and has internet access. Rulers will be needed for the forest simulation activity. Strings and meter sticks and a guide to North American trees will be needed for the outdoor activity. Students should have calculators and access to the internet for homework assignments.

Resources embedded in the curriculum: A fact sheet, forest simulation plot, and the essay “Fiasco in Indonesia” are the resources that are included in this curriculum.

On-line resources: Three short films on REDD. Reporting on REDD document. Satellite images from Landsat. The Forest Commission Report.
